Minamisawa Shrine

Minamisawa Shrine (Sapporo City, Minami-ku) is just a typical local shrine for its area, but there is something special about it. There is a monument to celebrate the birthplace of growing lavender in Japan. Lavender are also planted around the monument although it is not large. As for lavender in Hokkaido, Furano and the surrounding areas are the most well-known. However, Minamisawa is still a memorable place. Lavender originates in France, and was brought to Hokkaido to produce aromatic products. Now, lavender is seen in different places all over Hokkaido and their beautiful purple flowers are a commons sight in summer.
