Kobayashi Shuzo, a sake distillery

Kobayashi Shuzo (Kuriyama Town) is a sake distillery founded by Yonesaburo Kobayashi in 1878. On the premises, there are interesting facilities for visitors to learn about sake. Kitano Nishiki Museum exhibits many things related to sake making; especially their premium brand, Kitano Nishiki. Other old buildings exhibit old furniture and everyday goods. Moreover, there is a hall which can cater for private music concerts. Visitors can find out how old buildings from the age of their foundation are preserved and transofrmed to new facilities. This distillery has many fans of their sake, which uses rice produced only in Hokkaido without any food additives.

Mitara Muroran (Muroran City) is a road station below Hakucho Ohashi, which means Swan Bridge in English. This bridge stretches over the sea, and is the longest suspension bridge in eastern Japan at 1380 meters in length. It took 14 years to construct and was completed in 1998. A museum shows information panels and models to tell the story of the bridge's history and design. At the shop, quail's eggs - which are one of the Muroran's specialities - are sold. There is a big park facing the sea next to the road station.

Postcards in Hokkaido

Most post offices in Japan sell post cards which show unique images of local speciality foods or regional animals. The design is different in each prefecture. For example, in Hokkaido, Jingisukan barbecue, the Ezo red fox, and the Hokkaido brown bear are in the series. Of course, they are actual postcards for sending, locally or to foreign countries It might be interesting for foreign tourists to send these post cards to their family and friends at home while they are enjoying their travel. It may be a lovely surprise getting a postcard in today’s world of Facebook, Instagram, and emails.

Karinba Nature Park (Eniwa City) is next to Karinba Ruins. This area used to be a marsh with the Karinba River running through it. However, this river doesn’t exist any more as a result of a development project. In this park, there still remains water springs and they make good natural setting. Also, this park is known as a place where skunk cabbage grows in clusters in spring. Many people enjoy walking on the wooden footpath there. Karinba means the skin of cherry tree in Ainu language. A lot of dandelions also bloom at Karinba Ruins in spring.

Karinba Ruins (Eniwa City) are located about 800 meters north of JR Eniwa Station. The ruins are recognized as a graveyard used by ancient people living here about 3000 years ago. In 1999, when a new road was being constructed for a redevelopment project in front of the station, the ruins were discovered by chance. Some accessories such as lacquered combs, hair ornaments, earrings, bracelets, and decorative straps for a person’s waist were retrieved from the ruins. It was the first time lacquered ornaments used by ancient people in Japan were found.

Sapporo Museum Activity Center

Sapporo Museum Activity Center (Sapporo City Toyohira-ku) was established in 2001 with a view to helping Sapporo citizens understand natural resources in Sapporo, and join activities to study nature. This is not a big facility but the exhibits are well-suited to those interested in the study of living, and dead creatures. They exhibit many specimens of insects, plants and fossils. The most famous is a fossil of Sapporo Kaigyu, which is the oldest remains discovered of a sirenian (sea cow) living in temperate regions of the globe. This was discovered by a girl at Toyohira River in 2003. They also design programs for children to study nature.
