石狩濱海濱植物保護中心 / Ishikarihama Coastal Plant Conservation Center

Ishikarihama Coastal Plant Conservation Center (Ishikari City) is involved in the conservation of plants which grow on sandy dunes near the sea in salty wind. The number of these coastal plants is decreasing. The Rugosa rose - hamanasu in Japanese - which has beautiful, small, pink flowers in summer is an example. Also, the Glehnia - hamaboufu in Japanese - is an edible plant from the carrot family. The gathering of hamaboufu is now strictly forbidden. Visitors can learn about these important plants as well as animals which live near the sea. About 50 species of plants can be seen in their garden.
