鮭魚科學館 / Sapporo Salmon Museum

Sapporo Salmon Museum (Sapporo City Minami-ku) is a facility to breed not only salmon but other water creatures, and exhibit them. The main purpose of this free admission museum is to educate people about ecology. Toyohira River, which runs through the city of Sapporo, was clean enough for salmon to live in former days, but it deteriorated due to Sapporo's development and they disappeared from the river. However, the 'Come Back Salmon' Program started in 1979 as a citizen's public campaign. This resulted in environmental improvement and a lot of salmon returned after three years of their release.
