Ainu Village

Ainu Village (Akan Hot Springs) is one of the biggest Ainu communities in Hokkaido. Ainu are the indigenous people of Hokkaido. In the village, there are many souvenir shops to sell Ainu folk handicraft and accessories. Anyone can visit and enter the village for free - there is a big gate which displays big owl objects. Shima Fukurou, Blakiston’s fish owl in English, is worshiped as the Ainu's guardian. Not only many shops but also traditional Ainu houses, which are called 'chise' in their language, are there. Some 'chise' houses are ok to enter for free. Some kindly ask for a donation from visitors.
