Shiranuka Koitoi (Shiranuka Town) is a road station on Route 38 in eastern Hokkaido. The location is good for taking photos, with the Pacific Ocean immediately behind it. The important industry of this area is fishing, and products at their shop mainly consist of fresh seafood or seafood which can be kept for some days as souvenirs. Koitoi, the name of the area, literally gives an image of inquiring love. Among interesting products related to love, the most famous one is dried konbu kelp, which is small and cut into a kanji character. When put into hot water, a kanji letter which has good or lucky meaning magically appears.
