Lake Akan (Kushiro City) is one of the highlights of eastern Hokkaido tourism. There is a hot spring town on the lake - Lake Akan Hot Springs. There is a walking path along the lake where people can enjoy seeing the lake itself and also the nature of the hot springs town. Visitors can also find Bokke, a well known sightseeing spot, at the end of the path. The name Bokke is derived from "pofuke (boil)" which is a word in Ainu language. At Bokke, you can see bubbling mud ponds because of carbonic acid gas. Marimo (round green algae) is a special natural treasure of Japan, and can be seen on an island in the middle of the lake. You can get a boat to the island from the main wharf.
