Lake Notoro

Lake Notoro (Abashiri City) is a salt-water lake connected with the Sea of Okhotsk. Akkeshi-sou, a plant which thrives in salty ground, grows around the lakeside. The other name of the plant is Sango-sou. Sango means coral in Japanese, and sea asparagus in English. This is because the stem of the plant turns red in autumn, and resembles red coral. The best season is from the middle to the end of September, when the ground usually bears a striking likeness to beautiful red carpet. It's one of the signs of autumn in the Okhotsk area. Lake Notoro, in particular, is famous for Sango-sou.
