Tokachi Shikaoi Geopark (Shikaoi Town) is one of five Geopark sites in Hokkaido. The fields of this Geopark consist of a volcano, a cold climate and flora and fauna. The center of the area's tourism is Lake Shikaribetsu. This lake was formed by a volcanic eruption in pre-civilisation times. The eruption saw a big river naturally dammed, and the lake was formed. The coldest temperature on a winter day may fall to as low as minus 30 degrees. There are also a lot of plants and animals, including some unique to Hokkaido, such as Naki Usagi (pika, or whistling hare in English).

Yagishiri Island is quite small, with a coastline of just 12 kms in length. There is a 10 km long circular ring road along the coastline. The road is somewhat hilly, but it’s still fun to assail using rental bikes from the port. Alternatively, joining the sightseeing bus tour is also a good option. Even walking, a half day would allow one to take in all the sightseeing spots. Yagishiri is famous for low standing Japanese yew trees, and a big sheep station. The yew trees have grown in some strange shapes, and are named by their particular shape - a crane, a turtle, and so on.
