Ezo Risu - Hokkaido squirrel

Ezo Risu is a subspecies of red squirrel found only in Hokkaido (the English name is Hokkaido squirrel). The stand-out feature of its body are its erect ears, which are actually long hairs. It can be seen all over Hokkaido, even in parks near residential areas. In Sapporo, it’s easy to find them in Maruyama Park near Hokkaido Shrine. They don’t run away in the presence of people, and are very popular on account of their extreme cuteness. Ezorisu don't hibernate, and are active in the morning in spring, from sunrise to sunset during summer, in the daytime in autumn, and in the morning in winter.
