Ainu Folk Art Museum (Akan-ko Hot Springs) is located in the basement of a souvenir shop called ‘Kumanoya Fujito’ in Ainu-kotan which means Ainu Village in English. Kumanoya stands for ‘bears’ house’. The brown bear is recognized as a Mountain God by the Ainu - the indigenous people of Hokkaido. At the museum, there are various valuable woodcarvings and folk accessories. Touching them is strictly forbidden. When visitors want to enter, they need permission from a salesperson. Mr. Takeki Fujito is a well-known woodcarving artist and his work is exhibited in JR Sapporo Station. Please enjoy not only the museum but also their Ainu-related goods.
