Canadian World Park (Ashibetsu City) is a
theme-park focusing on an old Canadian town of the 19th century. The park came
about through the similarity of the climate of Ashibetsu and the town in which
the world famous Anne of Green Gables, written by Montgomery - a Canadian
novelist, was set. Making use of a former opencast coal mining site, it opened
in 1990, and initially charged an entrance fee. However, after the business
failed, it became a city-managed park, which was admission-free. In the
weekend, a few shops are open but not crowded. Some say it’s like a ruin.
