The demolition of the large signature snow & ice sculptures

A feature of the Sapporo Snow Festival that is becoming increasingly popular is the demolition of the large signature ice sculptures. The work starts in the early morning of the day after the final day of the festival, and is usually completed by the afternoon of the same day. Large digger machines are usually to carry out the interesting, yet somewhat sombre task. As the destruction of the artwork begins, an audible sigh can be heard from the spectators. Safety issues require the immediate destruction of the beautiful monuments, so it can’t be helped. People watching the show must remain a safe distance away, but are still afforded a good view.
