Zangi is a well known local staple of Hokkaido cuisine, standing for food which is deep-fried. Chicken is typically used for making zangi. However, amongst Japanese, the difference between karaage and zangi is a point of some debate. As for the answer? Karaage uses chicken, with the flavored powder being added prior to deep-frying. On the other hand, the chicken for zangi is marinated in special sauce, (with a base of soy sauce), for some time prior to cooking. Karaage can be eaten anywhere in Japan, while for the people of Hokkaido, zangi is a not only a popular izakaya restaurant dish, but also cooked at home.
