The Bank of Japan Otaru Museum

The Bank of Japan Otaru Museum (Otaru City) is managed by the central bank of Japan. This building used to be their Otaru Branch. A lot of interesting material related to currency and finance are exhibited. Admission is free. A total of 30 sculptures of Blakiston's fish owls were installed on both the inner and exterior walls. The owl has always been worshipped by Hokkaido's aboriginal people, the Ainu, as a guardian. Also, as owls are nocturnal, the bank liked them for night defense. Even now in Japan, all owl species are popular creatures which bring good luck.
