Hokkaido Shrine Festival (Sapporo City), also known as Sapporo Matsuri (Sapporo Festival), started in 1874. The dates are fixed every year - June 14th, 15th, and 16th. The main event is a big parade starting at the shrine, moving to the center of Sapporo to places such as Hokkaido Government Building, and then returning to the shrine. Parade participants wear old costumes used by high-class people in the Heian period. Also, four portable shrines and eight parade floats are included. At the shrine and Nakajima Park, a lot of shops and entertainment including a haunted house are open.
