A monument celebrating the discovery of wild hops (Iwanai Town) is located in front of the town’s history museum. In 1871, Thomas Antisell, an engineer invited from America to assist in developing Hokkaido, discovered the hops growing in the wild. Hops are one of the key ingredients in the production of beer. Now, Hokkaido is known as one of the main beer production areas of Japan. This discovery enabled the brewing industry to be developed in the 19th century. Admission to the historical museum is 200 yen for adults. Only seeing the monument would perhaps be underwhelming, but still an important point in Hokkaido’s history.
