Hokkai Ichigouki

New Chitose Airport is the biggest airport in Hokkaido and is acknowledged as the gateway of Hokkaido tourism. The airport was built in 1926 by the then Chitose Village. The village actually became a city in 1958. In 1926, an airplane called “Hokkai Ichigouki” owned by Otaru Newspaper landed there after flying from Sapporo. Hokkai stands for Hokkaido and Ichigouki means the airplane’s number - #1. An actual scale model of this airplane is now exhibited in the water purification facilities building in Meisui Fureai Park, where pure natural water gushes from the ground. This is to act in memory of the history of the city and tell the citizens.
