Sheep are a symbolic animal in Hokkaido. In
the 19th century, when Hokkaido was opened up, Edwin Dun brought 180 sheep from
his home country of America. He was one of the specialists hired by the
Japanese government to bring technology and knowledge, and is regarded as the
father of livestock in Hokkaido. Sheep became very important for food and
fabric, and contributed to the development of Hokkaido. Later, the sheep
industry fell in intensity, but it has gradually recovered in recent years.
Tourists can meet sheep in Hokkaido, and at some places, it is free of charge.
