The highest temperature during the day on May 26 reached over 30 degrees at many meteorological observation points in Hokkaido. Saroma Town, which faces the Sea of Okhotsk, reached a scorching 39.5 degrees. It was the highest temperature recorded for the day across the whole of Japan. This weather and temperature is exceedingly rare, and many locations actually saw new records set, since observation started. According to Japan’s Meteorological Agency, the heatwave was due to the sunny weather created by high air pressure, and a hot air mass from Mainland China. In eastern Hokkaido, a Foehn effect was also seen.
