Shiretoko Goko (Shari Town) is in the World Natural Heritage primitive forest of Shiretoko. Goko means five lakes in English. Five lakes are in a tight cluster, and are one of the main tourist drawcards in the area. From spring to autumn, Higuma, Hokkaido’s native brown bear and the biggest land mammal in Japan, can be frequently sighted. There are two boardwalk paths; one at more than 5 meters high, with the other at ground level. Prior to setting out on the ground level path, visitors need to attend a lecture. There is a charge for parking. Tours with guides are also popular.
