Mt. Usu Funka Memorial Park

Mt. Usu Funka Memorial Park (Toyako Town) was established in memory of the Mt. Usu eruption in 2000 (funka means eruption.) This eruption badly damaged local infrastructure such as roads and electricity, but there were fortunately no deaths. A lot of volcanic ash was used in the construction of the park. It faces Lake Toya and houses some sculptures in a quiet environment. The Moonlight (1991) by Igor Mitoraj, a well-known Polish artist, is the icon of this park. Sunbathing or picnicking are good ways to enjoy the park. Garbage must be taken away by visitors.
