Umi-no Furusato Kan or Sea Folk Museum (Rumoi City) is a learning center on a hill near Cape Ougon. Ougon stands for gold, derived from the shining of the sea. When Rumoi was in its heyday courtesy of herring fishing, this hill was a vital communication link for the fisherman regarding weather conditions, with messages being passed to the fishing fleet via smoke signals. Now, the museum provides visitors with information on the history and fishing industry of the town. There are in excess of 350 exhibits there. On the second floor, there is an observation deck and restaurant.
