Atsuta Fishery Harbor Morning Market

Atsuta Fishery Harbor Morning Market (Ishikari City) is open everyday from the beginning of April to the middle of October. The market is open from 7 a.m., and closes in the early afternoon. It is a popular venue, not only for local Ishikari residents, but also people from Sapporo. As it takes about one hour from central Sapporo by car, it’s a nice half day driving adventure. Flatfish, flounder, octopus, and scallops are available in June and July. The locals like to cook them at home straight after buying them, or enjoy cooking them outdoors at camp sites and the like. The fish sold differs over the months due to seasonal availability.

The best season for seeing roses is from June to October. It’s quite a long period for people to enjoy the roses on account of the many different rose species. Some start blooming in the middle of June, while others bloom as late as October. In Hokkaido, there are some popular rose gardens which have both early and later-blooming species. In Sapporo, Odori Park, the Royce Garden at Royce’s chocolate factory, and Yukijirushi Shubyo Horticulture Center are well known. Iwamizawa City and Haboro Town also feature large scale rose gardens. There are also many private gardens all over Hokkaido with roses for all to see.

Hopi之丘 / Hopi-no Oka

Hopi-no Oka (Akaigawa Village) is a guest ranch managed by Tonden Farm, which is a ham and sausage maker in Hokkaido. This is not such a big ranch, but is good for taking a breather while on a day trip around the Sapporo district. There are tame animals such as horses, goats and rabbits. Visitors can watch them free of charge, and it is also possible to buy food and feed them. Also, as a paid activity, horse riding is enjoyable. There is also a restaurant, and a shop selling light food like sausages or ice cream. Hopi means ‘peace’ in the language of Native Americans.

Ayame and Hana Shoubu flowers

Touyako Sculpture Park

Touyako Sculpture Park (Touyako Town and Soubetsu Town) consists of 58 sculptures and their locales. All of these locations are on the lakeside, so, it’s like a big circle around the lake. Touyako Sculpture Park is extensive, not a place as such, but with each sculpture housed at a park or along a walking path. It’s a journey of approximately 43 km to see all the sculptures, so it’s probably better for tourists to carry out the journey by car or by bicycle. The concept of this park is to be an outdoor sculpture park where people can admire sculpture in the pleasant surrounds of nature.

The Exhibition Room of Volcanic Materials of Mt. Usu

Sekitan-no Dai Rotou

Sekitan-no Dai Rotou (Yubari City) is designated as a prefectural treasure of Hokkaido. Sekitan means coal and rotou means outcrop; and Sekitan-no Dai Rotou stands for a large-scale outcrop of coal.
