Todowara (Betsukai Town) is the ruin of a
forest on Notsuke Peninsula, which is actually a big sand spit. Todomatsu, a
kind of pine tree in Hokkaido, used to grow there. Because of ground
subsidence, sea water seeped into the forest and the trees withered and died.
As the color of the trees turned white, they made a unique landscape which is
desolate and dreary. Some people say it’s like the world of the dead. In recent
years, as Todowara has naturally decayed, it’s been thought people won’t be
able to see it much longer. It’s 30 minutes on foot from the parking of the
nature center.
