Benten Island

Benten Island, or Benten-jima in Japanese (Tomari Village), is a very small island off route 229, which runs along the coast. It is not in fact an island, but a huge rock, about 10 meters off the coast. Benten is a god of water. There is a pedestrian bridge, so people can walk out to the rock. This rock island has a legendary story - a long time ago, a young Ainu (aboriginal people in Hokkaido) woman, prayed everyday to improve her love situation. The island is now popular for those who hope for a good marriage or pregnancy.
