(Esashi Town) is a road station facing the sea on route 227, which runs along the Sea of Japan. There is a unique bronze statue there, and it is popular to have one’s photo taken with it. The motif is of a man who lived in the area more than one hundred years ago, in the heyday of the herring industry, with the resulting prosperity in the town. He was very popular with his humorous character, and people around him became happy, laughed and were cheered up. Over the years, he became an icon of bringing happiness to the town. There is a small shop selling local products and snacks.
