Unseki

Unseki (Yakumo Town) is a strange-shaped rock which reminds one of clouds in the sky. Un stands for cloud, and seki stands for stone. In 1529, a commander of the Ainu (aboriginal people of Hokkaido) fought with the Wajin (the Yamato race, who are ancient native people of Honshu.) An Ainu myth tells that the fighting strength of the Wajin was inferior to the Ainu’s, and the Wajin hid behind this rock. Black clouds came out from the rock and covered the sky, and the Ainu people fled. This rock has interesting holes, with one of them being peculiarly similar to the shape of Hokkaido.
