Shishi Iwa and Mado Iwa (Setana Town) are strange-shaped rocks standing on the coast, which can be seen while driving on route 229. Shishi means lion and Iwa means rock. A lion seems face out to sea, roaring. A legend of Hokkaido’s aboriginal Ainu tells that a powerful man lifted up three big rocks and stacked them on the top of the rock (a myth); each at over 75 kilograms. As for Mado Iwa, Mado means window. Standing in the sea, people can see a beautiful sunset through the center hole and green hill behind the rock.
